About Us

Project Outreach is completely run by volunteers and all donation dollars go to our medical missions. There are no administrative costs.

The History

1993 was Project Outreach's first mission. We were invited to Da Nang Vietnam by the local government and the Da Nang General Hospital. That first mission focused on reconstruction of children with cleft lip and palate. Notably, Project Outreach was the first medical mission team to work in Danang after the Vietnam war.

In 1995 and 1997, our mission expanded to include Pediatric Eye surgery and Pediatric Urology. In 1998 Project Outreach brought a Pediatric Oncology team from Alberta Children's Hospital to work with our Vietnamese colleagues at the Ho Chi Minh Cancer Center. Formal educational days were part of each mission.

In 1999, Project Outreach sponsored Vietnamese pediatric nurses with subspecialties in Pediatric General Surgery and Pediatric Oncology to spend one month at Alberta Children's Hospital. In 2000, with the support of the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons, Project Outreach sponsored Vietnamese physicians to complete a 3 month fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesia, Pediatric General Surgery, Pediatric Urology and Pediatric Oncology at the Alberta Children's Hospital.

Project Outreach's work continued from 2000 to 2005 with physicians and allied health care workers from Calgary teaching at the National Institute of Pediatrics in Hanoi Vietnam.

In 2008, Project Outreach was invited to Cuenca, Ecuador, to perform Pediatric Orthopedic surgery. In 2011, Project Outreach was invited by the health authority in Peru, to provide reconstructive burn surgery. We have had successful medical and surgical missions to Peru in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019.

In 2017 we returned to Vietnam, to help provide medical and surgical care to the children from the central highlands of Vietnam. We returned in 2018 and in 2023 after the COVID 19 pandemic hiatus.

In 2024 Project Outreach sponsored 2 Vietnamese Medical students and facilitated a one week educational seminar in the Fundamentals of Simulation Based Learning.
